Siok Tey
Dr Siok Tey is a clinician scientist. She is a staff specialist in Clinical Haematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, and heads the Translational Cancer Immunotherapy Laboratory at QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute. Dr Tey completed her medical and subspecialty training in Brisbane in 2005. She then undertook a research fellowship at the Center for Cell and Gene Therapy at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, USA (2005 – 2007), followed by a PhD in cytomegalovirus immunology at QIMR Berghofer (2008- 2012). She was awarded an NHMC Early Career Fellowship and started her own research group in 2017. Dr Tey’s clinical and research interests are in the areas of bone marrow transplantation and cell and gene therapy, with a strong commitment to bench-to-bedside translation. She led one of the first academic clinical trials in Australia using in-house manufactured gene-modified T cells. She currently leads the academic Chimeric Antigen Receptor (CAR) T cell program at Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where she established in-house manufacturing capacity to improve access, reduce cost and enable future translation of pre-clinical research. Dr Tey maintains a strong interest in the basic immunology underpinning much of the transformative developments in clinical immunotherapy. She was awarded the Metcalf Prize in 2021 for her contribution to bone marrow transplant research.
